Small Business Month

After a tough two years, our small businesses deserve to celebrate and welcome more customers through their doors. There are more than 448,000 small businesses in Queensland, which account for 97 percent of the business sector, contributing around $117 billion to the state’s economy. A ‘#love your small business’ campaign will promote the buy local message across the state throughout May.
Most people understand that Small businesses help shape and enhance the personality of our communities. They understand the needs of the neighborhoods we live in and are part of what makes them great. That’s why it’s so important to use Small Business Month as an opportunity to finally say ‘thank you' to these beloved establishments.
During May each year, Queensland celebrates the contribution small businesses make in driving the economy, creating local jobs, and building strong communities.
Here are a few ways you can help celebrate in your small business.

1.    Celebrate -
To celebrate Small Business Month with your customers, create special offers or discounts for each of the four Fridays or Saturdays in May.  This will attract more business and be a way for you to thank the loyal customers who make your small business possible. Tell your story, acknowledge another small business or supplier, honour their efforts or expertise. Commit to shopping locally through the month of May.  Spread the word when you get take-away from your local area by tagging the restaurant in a picture of your food on Instagram with the hashtags. Spread their story for them.

2.    Connect - Another great way to commemorate Small Business Month is to offer something special that will exclusively be available for only that month. For example, you can have a signature drink named after your business or a special printed shirt or hat designed to celebrate your business. This gives customers a way to support and represent their favorite business in a new way.  Say thank you to people who are faithful supporters of your business.  Partner with other small businesses. Come up with a fun or helpful way to say ‘thank you’ with every customer purchase for Small Business Month, including a fun commemorative gift like a branded pen, water bottle, or bags with every purchase over $20. Create your own gifting product or purchase a white label product and give it away with your branding.

3.    Caring and Sharing -
What I know to be true is we can always make more money but we can never get back our health and our time. It is therefore critical that as we build our businesses, we design our business to serve and support us personally rather than the other way round. Sadly for many business owners, running a business comes with far too much sacrifice. They are trapped spinning on a hamster wheel going around in circles, oftentimes doing the same thing over and over, yet expecting a different result. Take care of your health and well-being and encourage other small businesses to do the same. Our biological needs and body health are so important to our success: exercise and eating, our psychological well-being and skills, our social life - the fun, interests, and our relationships, are all linked to our values, meaning, and purpose. Take time out for yourself and time to connect with your team. Healthy body, healthy mind, healthy business.

4.      Grow -
Invest in education for yourself and your team. Go to an event during the month of May or take that workshop that you have been looking to do.  What a great time to sign up and sharpen your business skills with some, one-on-one coaching sessions with our Small Business Coaching expert.   Whether you need to update your marketing practices, or really understand what your figures are telling you in your balance sheet this financial year, it can be a step in the right direction.
Happy “Small Business Month” of May!
Investing time, energy, and money in your business is never a bad idea when it’s done thoughtfully and intentionally. Consider celebrating your business, your customers, and your team members this May (or any month) through any of the ideas listed here, or something entirely unique to your company’s needs.  And don’t forget to support others in your region and industry by shopping small! No matter how you choose to celebrate, the most important thing is to recognize the incredible impact and contributions small businesses make all year long.  Happy “Small Business Month” of May
